I was able to be part of a volunteer tutor group for Somalian students at the African Center in Edmonton. Many students have come from refugee camps and have many hurdles to get over. It was an open format, so any school aged student with any school subject could come for help. It was an exciting opportunity as the students who attended were eager to learn. The program runs Monday through Thursday and on any given evening we could expect up to fourty students.

NXT Robotics Workshop

The NXT Robotics Workshop was a full day learning activity hosted by the University of Alberta. In the workshop we were given background on the program and applications for the classroom. We were given the opportunity to build our own robot and perform basic programming.

Alberta Education Exam Development Seminar

In this one day seminar we were exposed to the diploma creation process. We were then given question types/formats and pointers for creating a great question. Our presenters also exposed us to test wiseness and how to prevent it in our exam writing. Finally, we had the opportunity to create high quality questions for Biology 30 and Chemistry 30 with the help of the expertise of our presenters.

Aboriginal Workshop

I attended a three day workshop at the University of Alberta presented by Dr. Frank Elliot and Dwayne Donald. We were given background knowledge on Aboriginal peoples. We then looked at some of the Alberta programs of study and collaboratively integrated the way of knowing into lesson plans.
